"Make A Scarecrow" Gathering
No one is for sure on the real origin of the scarecrow, but many references say that scarecrows are for protection and to keep spirits and birds away from fields and gardens. Today, displaying or making scarecrows for Autumn decorations is just as popular as carving pumpkins. Two years ago, I visited some local farms to purchase my fall pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, and straw bales and was amused by all the creative scarecrows they created and displayed throughout their farm. It inspired me to try to create my own. I went home and started looking around the back yard storage area, garage and house for items to make my own scarecrow. You can use so many different things and recycle items too! I found some 1 6/8" inch wood pieces left by the prior owner of my home and decided that I could use them as the stake for my scarecrow. The creative wheels starting spinning in my head. I'll need stuffing, clothing, old fabric, string, a head, maybe a hat, paint, markers, nails, hammer and so on. Where will I put this scarecrow, I thought? After gathering all my supplies and deciding on my design, I got to work on my scarecrow. Below are pictures of my scarecrow the first year I made him using a white pumpkin that I hand painted the face on. Click on any photo to enlarge. Okay, so now it's your turn. Gather with your neighbors, family and friends and have a "Make a Scarecrow" party. As the host/hostess, you provide some fall snacks and warm cider or apple juice. You may also want to supply pumpkins for the scarecrow heads, paint, markers and twine. Another idea is to gather the neighborhood kids to make one or two scarecrows to be placed at the main entrance into your neighborhood to greet all your fall guests! You could also do this a community project and decorate your church yard, the town hall or library or town park, check with local officials first. Remember scarecrows don't have to be standing, some could sit on chairs or straw bales or sit inside wagons, etc. Be creative and have fun! Whatever you choose here are some basic supplies needed to make a scarecrow. Basic supplies to make a scarecrow:
More fun ideas for your gathering: 1. Serve up pumpkin or apple flavored snacks and cider (warm or cold). 2. Purchase straw bales for guest to sit on, especially for older guests to watch the teams in action. 3. Set up a side area for little ones to color pictures of scarecrows or paint little pumpkins. 4. Take a pictures of guest with scarecrows! 5. Gather around the scarecrows and do the scarecrow chant. Don't forget to video tape it!

I would love to add more photos to inspire others, so if you have created a scarecrow and would like to share your photos with a small caption, please email your photo and information to me. Photos should be sized for web display, captions no longer than 120 characters. I usually only post first initial, last name and location, but you may specify if you prefer to be anonymous.
